This was first large scale exhibition of Mark Rothko's work in Europe since 1970 and the first European showing of his earlier paintings. The exhibition examined the evolution of Rothko's unique way of painting, one with almost unequalled power to move the emotions of the viewer, expressing the most serious aspects of the human condition. It comprised 90 paintings in oil, acrylic and water colour in total, including 25 paintings and water colours executed before 1950.
