About the artwork
Oil Sketch No. 432/11, 1977 is a small painting by Gerhard Richter that was used as the basis for Abstract Painting No. 439. He has said, ‘I do not paint the oil sketches with the intention of using them for the big smooth pictures, but I subsequently use some of the sketches as patterns for big pictures’. Richter also explained that his oil sketches look like they are painted faster than the big paintings, but they often take longer as he goes back to make changes from time to time.

About the artist
Gerhard Richter is a German painter. Richter began painting enlarged copies of black-and-white photographs using only a range of greys. He became known for relying on actual subject matter when painting, even for his abstract works. In the late 1970s he stopped relying on real-life subjects but it is said that his paintings retained a ‘second hand look’ that made his works look as though he was still painting an actual subject.
