About the artwork
This late work by Rousseau is a beautiful example of his naive style of painting and unusual use of colour and composition, much admired by Picasso and later the Surrealists. Despite being painted in an unorthodox way, Rousseau still manages to paint his subject of a vase of flowers with great warmth and vitality

About the artist
Rousseau was a French painter with no formal artistic training. He’s best known for his lush jungle scenes inspired by trips to Paris gardens and zoo. Rousseau spent much of his adult life in a steady job with the Paris toll service, which earned him the nickname ‘Le Douanier’ (customs officer). When he retired aged 49 he devoted his time to his art, brushing off claims by critics that he was just a ‘Sunday painter’, and continued to develop his own naive style which would earn him the respect of modern artists like Picasso and Kandinsky who loved its simplicity.
