Poster of Lichtenstein’s 1992 multi-media work, Water Lilies with Cloud, created to coincide with Tate Liverpool’s 2017 exhibition Artist Rooms: Roy Lichtenstein in Focus.
Water Lilies with Cloud is part of a series of six works inspired by Claude Monet’s famous Water Lilies impressionist paintings. It shows the water-lilies and lily pads floating in water, with clouds reflected on the pond’s surface. To create the impression of water, Lichtenstein used strips of his characteristic stripes, dots and block colour panels, and also embossed stainless steel. The ‘swirls’ on the steel were created in partnership with Saff Tech Arts, using a drill press fitted with shoe rubber, especially to re-create a pattern Lichtenstein remembered from car dashboards in the 1920s.
Roy Fox Lichtenstein (1923 – 1997) was an American pop artist. During the 1960s he became a leading figure in the new art movement, based on art through pastiche. His work was influenced by popular advertising and comic book styles. He described pop art as "not 'American' painting but actually industrial painting", which was reflected in his work methods.
