Throughout his career, Scott professed a preference for the primitive. He saw ‘beauty in plainness’ and avoided adopting a showy handling of paint in favour of a simpler, more course technique. Pears feature regularly in his work in the 1970s and this work combines a sense of sensuousness with his characteristic austerity.

Born 1913 to Scottish-Irish parents, William Scott is the most internationally celebrated 20th century painter from Ulster, Northern Ireland. Scott is best known for his abstract and still-life paintings of simple kitchen objects. He strayed from these forms several times throughout his life but with little success. While serving in the army he made a number of watercolours of soldiers and the landscape, but when the war ended he returned to painting still lifes in earnest.
