What’s Going On is one of the best-known portraits by Barkley L. Hendricks. The striking portrait is an acknowledgement of Marvin Gaye’s song of the same title, pinpointing the moment when black protest music would become a hip and commercial commodity.
Barkley L. Hendricks (1945 – 2017) was a contemporary American painter who made pioneering contributions to black portraiture and conceptualism. While he worked in a variety of media and genres throughout his career, Hendricks' best known work took the form of life-sized painted oil portraits.
