Cushion cover with a design of a geisha from a section of Ushio Shinohara’s work 'Doll Festival’. Developed by Tate as part of The EY Exhibition: The World Goes Pop shop collection.

'Doll Festival', first presented in 1965, is a pop take on a traditional subject and is inspired by the prevalence of American symbols and culture embedded in Japanese culture at that time. The Western 'cowboy' in the middle is surrounded by traditional Japanese figures including a parade leader, a town woman, a male prostitute and an oiran.

Born in Japan in 1932, Shinohara was one of the founding members of the neo-dada group. His work combines Japanese traditionalism with a provocative take on the work of American pop artists.
