Paper size: 60 x 34 cm
Edition of 200, signed and numbered by the artist.
This limited edition lithograph was produced to accompany Tacita Dean's installation 'FILM' (2011/12) in Tate Modern's turbine hall.
Tacita Dean is an English draughtsperson, photographer and filmmaker. Dean originally trained as a painter, studying at the Slade School of Art. During this time her work started to show a predilection towards formats more often found in film and cinema. Dean’s drawing during this period took on the form of storyboards and subsequently a more narrative approach developed.
Chance encounter often plays the part of catalyst in Dean’s work, in which fictional and factual narratives are given equal bearing. Dean uses these elements to emphasis personal themes in the power of evocation and notions of time and memory. Dean's works play poetically on the theme of searching, as well as on the blurred identities of mysterious people or things. Dean's stories embraced the notion of struggle over elements, which explain the recurrence of the sea as a major protagonist in her work. Dean's minimal narratives are imbued with a sense of human failure and never-ending expectation resulting from actions that are curiously both heroic and modest.
Dean was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1998.
