Tate exclusive mini print of Francis Bacon’s’ Seated Figure’ originally painted in 1961.
This work conveys Bacon’s exploration of the human condition – the identity of the sitter is not disclosed and is simultaneously posed among some elegant items of furniture and confined within a box-like frame. This use of a box-like frame was one of Bacon’s trademark devices and underlies a sense of isolation found in the human condition as well as claustrophobic psychological intensity.
Francis Bacon was born to an English family in Dublin on 28 October 1909. Although he received little formal artistic training in his early years, he is perceived to be one of the greatest painters since JMW Turner. His extensive back catalogue of works include themes of entrapment, sexual encounter and the haunting of death as well as ‘lighter’ paintings of animals and sphinxes. He is perhaps most well known for his triptychs such as his series of ‘Black Triptychs’ painted following his lover’s George Dyer’s death in 1971.
