Jackson Pollock (1912–1956) is one of the most influential and provocative American artists of the twentieth century. Between 1947 and 1950 Pollock perfected his revolutionary drip technique: hovering over a piece of canvas stretched out on his studio floor, he poured, dripped and flicked paint from the end of a brush or stick. Incisive compositions emerged, in which space, form, colour and depth of field combined to generate dense, landscape-like planes of painterly vitality.
While these colourful, lyrical and non-figurative drip paintings rapidly established Pollock as the leading abstract artist of his generation, beginning in 1951 he reconfigured the painterly language and techniques of abstract expressionism to advance towards an explicitly figurative, and starkly monochromatic, practice, as seen in works such as Number 14, 1951. In this body of work, Pollock replaced the many encrusted layers of dripped paint with a more direct relationship between raw canvas support and black enamel. He would almost calligraphically apply the paint with sticks and basting syringes, which he wielded ‘like a giant fountain pen’, according to his wife, Lee Krasner. ‘I like to use a dripping, fluid paint… The method of painting is a natural growth out of a need. I want to express my feelings rather than illustrate them. Technique is just a means of arriving at a statement’, Pollock commented in that same year. His next group of works, made in 1952, including Yellow Islands and Number 8, 1952, dramatically reintroduced bright, primary colours to the monochromatic palette of his soak-stain draughtsmanship, and continued to mine the tension between abstraction and representation.
