Chagall returned to his hometown of Vitebsk from Paris in 1914 with the intention of marrying his fiancée, Bella, and returning to Paris. However, following the outbreak of the First World War, he remained in Russia for the next nine years. This painting was completed a year after his marriage and depicts himself – the poet of the title – reclining in the countryside.
