In Calla Lilies on Red O’Keeffe has painted the lily, one of her favourite motifs, against a backdrop of flowing red fabric. O’Keeffe’s calla lily paintings from the 1920s and 30s became her most recognisable works and were hugely popular. They even led to a nickname ‘The Lady of the Lily’, first coined by caricaturist Miguel Covarrubias in the New Yorker.
