When Peter Blake painted this picture of his long term friend David Hockney, Hockney was already a well known artist, and like Blake, was recognised as an important British Pop Art figure As well as artistic projects, Blake engaged in commercial work such as magazine covers and celebrity portraits and supported the assimilation of commercial and artistic work.
This portrait is based upon a collage of different elements including two photographs by prominent 1960s photographer Michael Cooper. The use of photographs and different collage elements is typical of Blake’s work and echoes the commercial commissions he undertook.
The image behind David Hockney is a Cooper photograph and was chosen by Hockney himself. The image of a young man in short shorts was probably deliberately homoerotic as David Hockney was well known to be gay and this theme ran through several of his works.
