This painting of a young Australian woman, Emma Moon, was commissioned to celebrate her marriage to the barrister Ernest Markham and is a fine example of Richmondís skill as a portraitist. The coat, richly embroidered by Emma herself, and the expensive fabrics give the image a feeling of luxury. Her pose and the expression on her face however are rather unenergetic.

          Artist details

Named after his artist fatherís friend, William Blake, Richmond was coached by Ruskin, then attended the Royal Academy School and became a well known society portraitist. His interest in making large allegorical works grew into the design of mosaic and stained glass. The glass mosaic in the apse and below the dome of St Paulís Cathedral and three large stained glass windows in Holy Trinity Church, Sloane Street are works by him.
