This expressionist painting is one of several portraits Alexej Jawlensky made with Spanish Woman as the title. This particular piece shows a woman wearing flowers in her hair, and at the base of her neck. Dominated by shades of blue, shadows on the woman’s skin are also picked out in deep blue hues, which help to emphasise her large eyes. Painted in oil paints on card, the visible brushstrokes in the thick paint give the painting an almost tactile, textural element to it, which add to the vibrancy of the artwork, highlighting the character of the sitter.

Alexej Jawlensky (1864– 1941) was a Russian expressionist artist. Born into an aristocratic family, he trained as a military officer before enrolling at the St Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts in 1890, where he met Marianne Werefkin. The two had a complex relationship that lasted until 1921, during which time Werefkin was Jawlensky’s partner, mentor and patron. In 1896 the couple moved to Munich and became acquainted with Wassily Kandinsky. Jawlensky travelled between Munich and Paris at the turn of the century, becoming highly influenced by emerging modernist trends. He co-founded the NKVM and became its president in 1911 while participating in The Blue Rider’s programme, staging a solo exhibition at Der Sturm in 1914. Jawlensky was celebrated for his musical sense of colour and mystic approach to artmaking, inspired by Rudolf Steiner’s spiritual writings on Theosophy. In 1924 he established the group The Blue Four with Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger and Kandinsky. They exhibited in North America and Europe, but after 1938 illness prevented Jawlensky from continuing painting.

International – 2-4 weeks

Please note that some items are dispatched separately if they are made to order (such as coffee, custom prints and custom print clothing, neon lights or furniture). This means that if you order these items alongside other shop products, they won’t all arrive together, and you’ll get several deliveries.

If the delivery time frame for each item has ended and you’re still waiting for something from your order, please get in touch and we’ll investigate for you.

Delivery costs

We currently offer free standard delivery on UK orders over £60. Please note that this is offer is valid only online. Our other delivery costs are as follows.

For orders under £60:

UK – £3.60 per order

European Union – £15 per order

Rest of world (including non-EU European countries) – £28 per order

Limited editions

Due to the nature of our Limited Edition artworks, Tate offers rates for packaging materials to sufficiently protect the works and a fully insured, door-to-door courier service, for both UK and international shipping.

USA & Canada – £80 each
European Union – £120 each
Rest of world (including non-EU European countries) – £150 each
 
 

Rugs

Rugs are dispatched directly from the Christopher Farr workshop, so they will arrive separately from any other items ordered from Tate Shop.

UK – £50 per order

Goldfinger + Tate furniture

As each item of furniture is made to order, delivery takes 12-14 weeks, and will arrive separately to any other items in your Tate Shop order.

UK – £150 per order using a specialist white-glove delivery service. An access check can be arranged for £80.
 

Food & Wine

Our collection of food and wine is only available for delivery in the UK. We currently offer free delivery on wine orders over £100, using a specialist white glove service within the M25 area.

Wine: UK only – £20 per order

Please note that our wines can only be purchased by those aged 18 years and over. Customers will be asked to provide proof of age upon delivery.

Refunds & returns

Please contact our customer service team within 45 days if you need to return anything from your order. We will be happy to offer you a full refund, replacement or exchange on any items excluding custom prints, Goldfinger + Tate furniture, face coverings and pierced earrings. We cannot cover the cost of returning the items, unless we've made a mistake or they are faulty.
