The exhibition was part of a project devised by Gormley, where members of Tate Liverpool’s local communities came together to sculpt 40,000 hand-sized figures for the exhibition. It was an incredible feat of team work, with participants describing a feeling of immense satisfaction at the achievement itself, and quality of the experience. 30 tonnes of clay, and use of their kilns and expertise were given by St Helens brickmakers Ibstock, and children, parents, grandparents and people of all ages from the local community made up the sculpting team of around 100 people. The figures were made over the course of a week, and were then transported to Tate Liverpool and ‘planted out’ in the gallery for the exhibition.

About the artist: Sir Antony Mark David Gormley is a British sculptor. His most famous works include the public sculpture Angel of the North, 1998, and Another Place on Crosby Beach near Liverpool. Hi work usually uses the human body as its subject, creating metal casts often from his own body. Tate has included his work in several exhibitions, and his work forms part of the collection.
