Born in Paris in 1885, Delaunay started off his artistic career in theatre design. It was just two years later, under the influence of the neo-impressionists’ use of colour, that he focused on painting. He was known for bringing vibrant colour to cubism and cofounded the orphism art movement which put emphasis on bold colours and strong shapes. The sense of dynamic movement and his focus on the use of colour and colour harmonies in his work set him apart from other cubists at the time.
