This work comes from a period in Léger’s career that had a strong focus on technology as the language of modernity. Serving as an engineer during World War One in the French army, the artist developed an interest in semaphore, and the use of a visual system for communication. Léger used this interest to explore his own emerging language of abstraction, using bright colours, repeated patterns and fragmented shapes.

French painter and designer Fernand Léger, was born in Agentan, Normandy in 1881. His work encompasses cubist and semi-abstract styles, and in his later years he also worked in design for the stage. Léger also became an active advocate for peace, and in 1948 became a founder-member of the National Council of the World Peace Movement.
