In this painting, Léger recreates a classical theme, depicting two women intertwined, holding a flower. Whilst his theme is traditional, his methods remain modern. Stylised and semi-abstract, the women are rendered as lightly-shaded outlines against bold rectangles of bright colours.

French painter and designer Fernand Leger, was born in Agentan, Normandy in 1881. In 1909 he participated in the Cubist movement and developed a semi- abstract style. He fought during the First World War and took refuge in the USA during the Second World War. In the USA he made compositions of athletes. Upon return to France in 1945 he continued to paint but he also worked as a designer for the ballet.
