Tony’s Anvil is another of Bowling’s ‘poured paintings’, created to push the boundaries of paint and painting. In 1973 he built a tilted platform that allowed him to pour paint from a height of up to two metres, and used it to create several pieces that sought to capture the experience and possibilities of paint. Rejecting definitions and metaphors, Bowling sought for an elusive feel in these works - ‘where the thing is really giving out a certain kind of information, and withholding so much, that it fascinates you’.

Frank Bowling (born 1934) moved to Britain in his late teens from Guyana, and studied painting at the Royal College of Art alongside David Hockney, R.B. Kitaj and Derek Boshier, graduating in 1962 with the Silver Medal in painting. Bowling’s work combines figuration, abstract elements, contemporary and autobiographical references with intense experimentation and exploration of the possibilities of paint. He was elected as a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2005, and awarded an OBE in 2008. He continues to work in his studios in New York and London.

As each print is handmade to order they take a little longer to prepare. We’ll dispatch your order as soon as it is ready, separately from any other items.
