Apple Family – 2 was painted during a visit to Lake George, to stay with O’Keeffe’s future husband, photographer Alfred Stieglitz, in his family’s summer home. At this time her approach to painting apples was almost photographic – possibly inspired by Stieglitz’s photos of the apple trees at Lake George – and she has chosen a very realistic palette of strong reds, browns and greens.

Georgia O’Keeffe is best known for her paintings of magnified flowers, animal skulls and New Mexico desert landscapes. O’Keeffe made her debut in 1916 and was immediately recognised as a trailblazing artist, while today her legacy as an American art icon and a pioneer of twentieth-century art is widely recognised.

As custom prints are made to order, unfortunately we cannot accept returns if you have changed your mind or made a mistake.
