Additional Information

Original vintage exhibition poster for Gilbert & George’s The Cosmological Pictures, 1993 at Tate Liverpool. It features a large image of Down to Earth 1989, by Gilbert & George.

The Cosmological Pictures was a touring exhibition put together by Gilbert & George to create discussion and communication in cities across Europe. Their chosen title word 'cosmology' comes from the Greek words for 'world' and 'discourse', and their aim was to emphasise the power of human thought to remake life and shape the future through communication, questioning and discussion, prompted by the pictures. It visited Krakow, Rome, Zurich, Vienna, Budapest, The Hague, Dublin, Barcelona, Liverpool and Stuttgart.

The poster text reads:

GILBERT & GEORGE

THE COSMOLOGICAL PICTURES

TATE GALLERY LIVERPOOL

About the artists:

Gilbert & George are a duo of British artists. Gilbert Prousch and George Passmore were born in Italy and Devon respectively. They met in 1967 as students at St Martin's School of Art in London. Their strategy was to make themselves into sculpture, so sacrificing their separate identities to art and turning the notion of creativity on its head. Tate has had two exhibitions dedicated to the pair, and holds a number of their works in the collection.
