In 1913, the year in which this work was created, Goncharova wowed Moscow with her first major retrospective. She was still only in her early thirties and the exhibition included over 800 works.

Natalia Goncharova (1881-1962) was a Russian artist who blazed a trail with her experimental approach to art and design. She found acclaim early in her career and established herself as the leader of the Russian avant-garde with a major exhibition in Moscow in 1913. Her immense body of work includes costume design, avant-garde cinema and vast religious paintings.
