During 1916 Gonchorova and her partner Mikhail Larionov traveled with the Russian art critic Serge Diaghilev on a ballet tour to Spain. The trip had a profound influence on Goncharova and the atmospheric colours of the country began to make an appearance in her work.

She found acclaim early in her career and established herself as the leader of the Russian avant-garde with a major exhibition in Moscow in 1913. Her immense body of work includes costume design, avant-garde cinema and vast religious paintings.
