Additional Information

John Singer Sargent’s painting of Lady Gertrude Agnew was a great success for both artist and sitter when it was first exhibited in London, at the Royal Academy in 1893. Sargent was commissioned to make the portrait in 1892 by lady Agnew’s husband, Sir Andrew Agnew. Her direct gaze and casual pose marked a departure from the standard practices of contemporary portraiture at the time, and added to the painting’s positive reception. Lady Agnew’s silk sash and white gown, with its diaphanous sleeves and appealing texture, enhances her complexion, dark hair and eyes, and contrasts beautifully with the draped blue silk of the wall behind and floral chair she reclines in.

American painter John Singer Sargent was considered the most fashionable portrait painter working in England and the USA in the late 19th century. During his early career in 1880s he was influenced by his friend Monet towards Impressionism, but by the 1890s had success with society portraits. After 1900 Sargent spent his summers on long sketching holidays and shocked social circles when he decided to give up portraiture in favour of landscapes. In 1918 he worked as a war artist and from 1890 until c. 1925 he painted murals for Boston Library and Museum.
