Additional Information

Now considered a masterpiece, this artwork marked a highly significant event in John Singer Sargent’s career. A portrait of Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau, an American socialite much admired for her beauty on Parisian society, Sargent made several bold and unconventional choices, such as his choice of outfit and pose for his sitter. Unfortunately the painting caused such a scandal when first exhibited that Sargent had to leave Paris and rebuild his reputation in Britain. Initially Sargent painted the strap of Madame Gautreau’s dress slipping down her shoulder, a detail later amended because of the offence it caused. Sargent’s large sketch for the piece, Study of Mme Gautreau, c.1884, is part of Tate’s collection.

American painter John Singer Sargent was considered the most fashionable portrait painter working in England and the USA in the late 19th century. During his early career in 1880s he was influenced by his friend Monet towards Impressionism, but by the 1890s had success with society portraits. After 1900 Sargent spent his summers on long sketching holidays and shocked social circles when he decided to give up portraiture in favour of landscapes. In 1918 he worked as a war artist and from 1890 until c. 1925 he painted murals for Boston Library and Museum.
