Opal Rock Candy Slice bracelet

Handmade by artist and designer Aliyah Hussain especially for Tate, each pleasingly bright and tactile Opal Rock Candy Slice bracelet is unique thanks to Aliyah’s polymer clay process, in a colour palette inspired by its gem namesake. Aliyah describes the collection as inspired by rock formation in geology and childhood visits to Blackpool and her local sweet factory, incorporating similar processes found in sugar work to her jewellery making practice:

‘The pieces start out large and are then compressed and stretched to form long sticks of rock (or canes) that contain patterns which are then sliced. Each slice is unique as the patterns shift slightly throughout. The pressure applied when forming the canes mimics the shifts and changes found in slow moving geological happenings; when elements combine and compress over millions of years to form crystals and rocks filled with colour and pattern.’

All of Aliyah’s jewellery is informed by her sculptural and drawing work, with a particular interest in form, line and colour. She creates each piece by hand in her studio at Islington Mill, Salford.
