Additional Information

Paul Klee’s painting is an expressive piece, blending representational elements such as white stick men, simple trees and houses, with abstract imagery in moody purples, yellows, greens and browns. Appropriately for the title, Legend of the Swamp has a folkloric feel to it, with a huge, abstracted figure hinted at in the centre of the piece, which towers over the houses and church of the village scene. Part of Klee’s series of ‘cosmic landscapes’, the painting was said to be symbolic of nature itself.

Paul Klee (1879– 1940) was a Swiss-German artist, art theorist and talented musician. Paul Klee first trained as a violinist, before studying painting at the Munich Academy of Art. He spent time in Italy and Switzerland, moving to Munich permanently in 1906 with his wife Lily, a piano teacher. He engaged with experimental drawing and reverse glass painting. In 1911 he met Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) artists, who shared his deep belief in the spiritual nature of artistic activity. Previously a solitary figure, Klee started exhibiting and publishing, also becoming interested in colour and light after meeting Robert Delauney. A trip to Tunisia in 1914 with fellow artists Auguste Macke and Louis Moilliet inspired Klee to strive for more abstract compositions. Conscripted during the war, he developed an interest in politics, embracing socialist ideas. Klee joined Bauhaus, working alongside Wassily Kandinsky and Lyonel Feininger with whom he would form The Blue Four. Struggling with ill health, he passed away in Switzerland in 1940.
