Description
Poster of Paula Rego’s Island of the Lights from Pinocchio, 1996 printed on fine art paper.

Rego recalled a fascination with Disney’s dark undertones for this painting, gained from childhood visits to the cinema with her grandmother. Here, Rego recreates a scene from Disney’s Pinocchio, where boys are taken to a magical island of seeming paradise, urged to gorge themselves on gluttonous pleasures, and then transformed into donkeys to be sold to salt mines. The religious undertones are brought to the fore in Rego’s painting, with the mine appearing as a yawning, black chasm into whose mouth the demonic figures of donkeys and boys in various stages of transformation enter, performing acts of violence on each other.

Paula Rego was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1935 and has travelled between London and Portugal throughout her life. She studied painting at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, and her career as an artist spans half a centuryWorking from literature, myths, fairy tales, cartoons and religious texts, Rego creates narrative works imbued with mystery. She is drawn to subjects that are well known, and takes her imagery from sources as varied as Peter Pan and Mary Magdalene.

Our posters feature a white border and the image title. Printed and produced in the UK.
