The painting depicts a view of part of the garden at the artist’s home in Normandy. Beyond the wall lies the rest of the village of Eragny. The figure in the orchard is Pissarro’s wife. Most of his landscapes feature a human figure; he was interested in the relationship between man and his environment. In this painting the female figure complements the quiet, domestic nature of the orchard scene.

Born in 1830 in Saint Thomas in the Danish West Indies, to French parents, Pissarro was a French Impressionist painter, etcher and lithographer of landscapes and figures. Before moving to Paris in 1855 to study art, he accompanied the Danish artist Fritz Melbye to Caracas, making drawings and watercolours. He left the Ecole des Beaux-Arts to work at the Academie Suisse where he met Monet, Cezanne and Guillaumin. Pissarro contributed to six Impressionist exhibitions between 1874- 86, and was the most constant supporter of the group.
