To achieve a consistent viewpoint, and to help with the unpredictable British weather, Pissarro rented an apartment in Kew. Depicting Kew as a mix of green space and industry, Kew Bridge’s Pumping Station is a prominent feature of this painting, and on Kew Green itself a cricket match – a sport Pissarro became very fond during his time in London – takes place.
The EY Exhibition: Impressionists in London
Date of work
Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was a Danish-French Impressionist painter, and later mentor of Cézanne and Gauguin. He moved to London briefly during the Franco- Prussian war, and returned to visit several times in the 1890s. A pivotal figure in the Impressionist movement, Pissarro was the only artist to have shown his work at all eight Paris Impressionist exhibitions, from 1874 to 1886.
