Description
Poster of R.B. Kitaj’s The Wedding, 1989-93 printed on fine art paper.

Here Kitaj painted a scene from his own life – his wedding to American artist Sandra Fisher at a London Synagogue in 1983. Partly inspired by Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, the painting encapsulates many of the central themes of Kitaj’s work – his Jewish identity, his family (his three children are picture, even though one was not yet born at the time of the wedding), and his role in the artistic community. Several of Kitaj’s friends and fellow artists are pictured, including Hockney, Auerbach and Kossoff.

Ronald Brooks Kitaj (1932 – 2007) was an American artist, whose work had a profound influence on British Pop Art, and whose drawing skills were comparable with Degas. Alongside serving in the Merchant Navy and in the United States Army, Kitaj studied art in Vienna, New York City, Oxford and London. At the Royal College of Art, Kitaj studied alongside many prominent artists of the 1960s, with David Hockney remaining a life-long friend. The keys themes of his later work were alienation, his Jewish heritage, and the effect of his wife’s death.

Our posters feature a white border and the image title. Printed and produced in the UK.
