Additional Information

Slavs and Tatars generously produced Qabaret, 2016, to celebrate and support the opening of the Blavatnik building at Tate Modern.

Qabaret, 2016, is a three-dimensional object in a limited edition of 100. The screen-printed image on the polished surface shows a mouth surrounded by three charecters from the Cyrillic alphabet. Cyrillic is used as the national script in various Slavic, Turkic, Mongolic and Iranic-speaking countries in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia and Northern Asia. Adopting a pop art style, the mouth with red lips is open-wide as if vocalising or, as the title Qabaret suggests, singing the Cyrillic characters.

Prices of the artwork are liable to change. As a limited edition sells out, prices of the artwork are subject to increase and the price will be clearly indicated.

About the Artists

Slavs and Tatars is a collective of artists founded in 2006 who identify “the area east of the former Berlin Wall and west of the Great Wall of China”—a vast landmass where Europe and Asia merge—as the focus of their work. Members of the collective have lived and travelled in the region, which has been realigning itself since the collapse of Soviet Communism and have experienced escalating tensions between Eastern and Western identities— populations, allegiances, and languages are all in transition.

In exploring the area’s expansive historical narratives and transnational relationships, Slavs and Tatars forgo a strictly analytical stance for something more associative, intimate, and playful. Their projects stage unlikely combinations of mediums, cultural references, and modes of address; books and printed matter figure prominently in their work, as do contemplative, library like installations where visitors may consider their publications.

The work of the collective has been shown at Museum Tinguely, Basel (2020), Lahore Biennale 02, Lahore (2020), the 58th La Biennale di Venezia, Venice (2019), with solo exhibitions at MoMA, NY (2012), Secession, Vienna (2012), Kunsthalle Zurich (2014), Dallas Museum of Art (2014), and GfZK, Leipzig (2014).
