Additional Information

Discover the ancient land and myths of Cornwall through the eyes of British surrealist painter Ithell Colquhoun.

Colquhoun continues to display her profound kinship with nature in this personal response to Cornwall. Her finely wrought and learned observations of festivals, fairs and druidic rituals, quickly establish her as the reader’s gnostic guide to the county. She paints a land of ghosts, pedlars, borrowed saints, holy sites, charmed wells and crumbling megaliths. By animating the rocks and waters of her chosen home, Colquhoun connects us to the mystical beauty of rural Cornwall while exploring the interplay between mankind and the landscape.

With an introduction by Stewart Lee

Ithell Colquhoun (1906 – 1988) was a British artist, poet, author and occultist. A member of the British Surrealist Group for a time, she studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, exhibited with the London Group and created works and techniques exploring ‘psychomorphologies’ – attempts to capture psychic space in painting. She was eventually expelled from the Surrealist Group after refusing to renounce occultism, a subject she became a recognised authority on.

Stewart Lee is a London based stand-up comedian and writer. His work includes Jerry Springer: The Opera and the BBC series Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle.
