O’Keeffe picked up animal skulls from the New Mexico desert when she first started to visit the area and used them as subjects for her paintings. Whether they were set against the unique local landscape or painted in isolation to any natural environment, O’Keeffe’s animal skull paintings were to become some of her most iconic pieces.
From the Faraway, Nearby depicts an extravagant antlered skull floating against a backdrop of the New Mexico landscape that O’Keeffe was so passionate about.
