This humorous silk eye mask was inspired by Louise Bourgeois, who was an insomniac for most of her life, and described sleep as ‘paradise’. The eye mask features Bourgeois’s own eyes, taken from a photograph of the artist, giving you the wise and watchful eyes of the iconic artist while you sleep. The strap is elasticated to fit comfortably over your head and features the phrase ‘Key to insomnia: peace or trust‘, which references a note written on the back of one of Bourgeois’s Insomnia drawings from the mid-1990s. The mask is finished with blue and white stripes inspired by Bourgeois’s fabric drawings from 2003.
Louise Bourgeois was a renowned French-American artist and sculptor, best known for her contributions to both modern and contemporary art, and for her spider structures entitled Maman, one of which was on show for the opening of Tate Modern in 2000.
Bourgeois studied mathematics at the Sorbonne before turning to studio arts. In 1938, after marrying Robert Goldwater, an American art historian, critic and curator, she went to New York, where she enrolled in the Art Students League and studied painting for two years. During World War II she worked with Joan Miró, André Masson and other European expatriates.
Although Bourgeois exhibited with the Abstract Expressionists, she never became an abstract artist. Instead, she created symbolic objects and drawings expressing themes of loneliness and conflict, frustration and vulnerability.
