Dead Pinon Tree depicts one of the many dead trees that littered the landscape of New Mexico near O’Keeffe’s Ghost Ranch house. She uses the rich colours of the red hills in the region as a backdrop for the twisted branches of the tree, painted in almost silhouette style, reaching every layer of the background from earth to sky.
