Richard Long was born in Bristol, UK in 1945, where he continues to live and work. Since the 1960s he has been creating sculpture, photographic and textual work founded upon a deep affinity with nature and the relationship between art and landscape.
Long's work stems directly from his engagement with the space and materials of nature acquired through the experience of making solitary walks. These take him through rural and remote areas in Britain, or as far afield as the plains of Canada, Mongolia and Bolivia. Long never makes significant alterations to the landscapes he passes through. Instead he marks the ground or adjusts the natural features of a place by upending stones for example, or making simple traces. He works frequently in the landscape but also uses gathered natural materials within the gallery, such as his 1989 Turner prize winning work White Water Line. His work explores the dynamics between time, distance, geography, measurement and movement.
