This luminous and deeply atmospheric early drawing introduces some of the themes that would occupy Nash throughout his life. He continued to use moonlight to create dreamlike nocturnal worlds – strange landscapes of the mind – in many pictures over the following years. This fantastical vision, of two pyramids adrift in a rolling sea, anticipates the ideas of surrealism which would so influence his later works.
