Original: Screenprint on paper 35.9 x 30.8 cm ® The Estate of Patrick Caulfield/DACS 2011

Patrick Caulfield was a keen drinker, arriving at his “morning pub” at opening time for ale, before moving on to double Irish whiskeys. After lunch and work, he would move to the evening pub before returning home. As a result, glasses of red wine often appeared in his paintings. Wine Glasses is one of Caulfield’s most recognisable and popular paintings, due to the subject matter and the commercial styling which was so unusual in art at the time.

          Artist details

English painter and printmaker, Patrick Caulfield studied at Chelsea School of Art and at the Royal College of Art, one year below the students identified as originators of Pop art. In the early 1960s Caulfield's painting was characterised by flat images of objects against unmodulated areas of colour. Gradually his attention shifted to architectural elements. During the 1980s he again turned to a more stripped-down aesthetic, particularly in large paintings with a vivid sense of place.
