          Artist details

English painter and etcher Walter Greaves was the son of J. M. W. Turner’s boatman. Greaves and one of his brothers, Henry Greaves met Whistler in 1863, introducing him to the delights of the Thames, becoming his studio assistants, pupils and close friends for over 20 years. His later nocturnes, drawings and etchings demonstrate his absorption of Whistler’s teachings. However in the late 1870s Whistler excluded Greaves from his social circle of professional artists, which affected his reputation and led to his poverty.
