Oil paint and graphite on canvas. Purchased 1945

This is one of the first works Nicholson painted after returning to the subject of abstract still lifes in 1945. In this painting the combination of subtle shades and tones with more vivid white and scarlet is typical of the range of colours he favoured in the early post-war period. He has used contrasting colours to define the shapes of the densely-grouped objects on the table.
