Original: Oil on canvas, 40.6 x 26 cm Tate, London

Palmer's painting is of Pistil Mawddach falls, North Wales. There are two figures fishing in the foreground of the painting, and the strong element of light suggests that a rainbow has appeared at the bottom of the waterfall.

          Artist details

English painter, draughtsman and etcher, Samuel Palmer was a key figure of English Romantic painting who represented, at least in his early work, its pastoral, intuitive and nostalgic aspects at their most intense. He is widely described as a visionary and linked with his friend and mentor William Blake. He had none of Blake's irony or complexity, though, and was inspired by a passionate love of nature that found its philosophical dimension in unquestioning Neo-Platonism.
