Elizabeth I, 1966 is an image of the current British Monarch, Elizabeth II. The picture was taken from a newspaper and re-photographed by the artist. The grey in the image resembles the black and white photograph from which the piece derives. Richter confirmed that the ‘I’ in the title of the piece indicates that this print was the first of the two versions of the same subject, which were made at the same time.
