Painted in 1970, Bottle and Bowl, Blues on Green followed the end of William Scott’s second period of painting pure abstracts. He only began to reintroduce objects back into his paintings in the late 1960s. This piece is an example of how Scott painted normal bottles and bowls with abstract forms.

          Artist details

Born 1913 to Scottish-Irish parents, William Scott is the most internationally celebrated 20th century painter from Ulster, Northern Ireland. Scott is best known for his abstract and still-life paintings of simple kitchen objects. He strayed from these forms several times throughout his life but with little success. While serving in the army he made a number of watercolours of soldiers and the landscape, but when the war ended he returned to painting still lifes in ernest.
