          Artist details

English painter, Philip Wilson Steer was born 1860 but didn’t turn to painting until 1878. As a figure painter, Steer was influenced by Whistler and Degas. By the beginning of the 1890s he was the leading follower of French Impressionism in England, although his work often came close to Symbolism. A major theme of his work was the British countryside. He later painted in watercolour and after starting to lose his vision his style became looser yet compositionally more refined, verging occasionally on total abstraction.
