Untitled (the fact of the matter is) from Amikam Toren’s Armchair Painting series. For the series, Toren used oil paintings he’d found and bought from charity shops, and cut words out of the canvases, changing their appearance and function. In this piece, Toren has incised the phrase ‘the fact of the matter is’ into the centre of a picture of a vase of pastel coloured roses, painted in oil. The canvas is suspended away from the support, so that the words appear in white, the shadows of the letters faintly visible through the incisions.

Amikam Toren (b.1945) is an artist working in mixed media, whose work explores the nature of objects and images. He often uses found or thrifted objects, changing them to make a different statement to their original intention, to ‘reinvent’ them. Toren’s work has been exhibited internationally since the early 1980s, and Tate holds eight pieces of his work in the collection.

As each print is handmade to order they take a little longer to prepare. We’ll dispatch your order as soon as it is ready, separately from any other items.
