This image was taken during a fashion shoot Armet Francis was commissioned to do. Francis used these fashion shoots as a method of social documentary. In an age where white models and glamorous backdrops dominated the genre, he photographed Black models in urban locations - in this case, Brixton. His models and images showed the Black British community as glamorous, vibrant individuals, capturing the emerging sense of Black British style.

Armet Francis (born 1945) is a Jamaican-born photographer and publisher who has lived in London since the 1950s. He has been documenting and chronicling the lives of people of the African diaspora for more than 40 years, Francis was the first Black photographer to have a solo exhibition at The Photographers’ Gallery in London and was a co-founder of the Association of Black Photographers (now Autograph ABP) in 1988. His work is held in the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Museum of London collections, and he has exhibited worldwide.
