Painted on two plywood panels Smith found in a skip, using signwriting and Dulux household paint, this work was made in London in 1997. Smith cited his father as the source of the work’s slogan, explaining that ‘on his death bed he said to me, “Make art, not war. Don’t hate, draw”’. The choice of recycled and found materials is important to the artist, as it allows people to ‘construct their own realities’ and organise their world differently.

Bob and Roberta Smith is the pseudonym of British contemporary artist, author and musician Patrick Brill (born 1963). An outspoken art education advocate, the idea that political campaigns are actually extended art works is central to their work, and they are best known for their ‘slogan’ art in the form of painted signs.

As each print is handmade to order they take a little longer to prepare. We’ll dispatch your order as soon as it is ready, separately from any other items.

UK — £7.50 per print
