Additional Information

This painting is often credited as being Rossetti’s turning point from Medievalism to more Venetian inspired oil painting. The title (‘The mouth that has been kissed’ in English) references a line from 14th-century Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron. Rossetti wrote the full line on the back of the painting: ‘Bocca baciata non perde ventura, anzi rinnova come fa la luna’ (The mouth that has been kissed loses not its freshness; still it renews itself even as does the moon’ ). With Fanny Cornforth as model, Rossetti wrote that he used the piece to try to perfect his portrayal of skin and flesh.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828 – 1882) was an English painter, poet, illustrator and translator. In 1848 he founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood alongside Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. Influenced by literature and medieval revivalism, he would often compose poetry to accompany his paintings, and William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and Rossetti found each other a source of mutual inspiration. He was married to fellow artist Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal, who modelled for many of his paintings. Several his works form part of Tate’s collection, including many of his most celebrated paintings.
